Maybe That’s What He Wanted All Along!

job lols - Maybe Thats What He Wanted All Along!

When Andy Warhol made his paintings of Campbell’s Soup , I doubt he had any idea that the had so many admirers within the company!

While I’m sure that you can buy a lot of soup with the $11.7 million that one of his soup-can paintings later fetched, the thought behind receiving a couple cases of his favorite kind of soup might actually have meant more than the money.

This must have been before the invention of coupons. Now if you call and tell them you got a rock in your spaghetti sauce they apologize and mail you a couple of coupons and expect you to stfu and go away.

    Today, current owners got –

    “Dear Nonlawyer:
It has come to our attention that you are in possession of an unauthorised reproduction or forgery of one of our designs. You must either provide proof that you have destroyed it or send it to the company. Failure to do either within sixty days from receipt of this notice will result in prosecution.”

  3. NeonCat says:

I’ve heard that if Warhol had a visitor he liked, he would sign a can of Campbell’s and give it to them.

  4. Happy_Platypus says:

Um… I think this manager was missing the entire point of the art. Warhol was making a statement about the mass reproduction of modern art undermining the true meaning of art.
Who really knows… maybe he really liked tomato soup as well. -shrug-

    • katherine says:

Warhol also wanted to make art that was accessible to the common, everyday man. Before Warhol (who turned his originals into mass-produced screen prints), art was only commissioned or bought by the rich. He apparently also had Campbell’s tomato soup for lunch everyday until he died.

  5. Wasn’t it often the case that Warhol tended to get others to do the painting and then he just signed the finished piece?
Maybe the tins of soup went to the poor sods who actually painted the pictures?

  6. Finie says:

If Warhol made those paintings today, you would be reading a cease and desist letter, followed by a copyright infringement lawsuit.

  7. If I was Campbell’s Soup I would have sued him and then sent him a can of soup.
