  1. Captain Slog says:

So that’s why printers are always in sleep mode during the day!

  2. fish eye no miko says:

I feel sorry for the first poor dope who tries to print off a copy of his or her butt on that thing.

  3. Evertide says:

    That would explain a LOT….

  4. forge says:

That’s a Laserjet 4; I kinda always wondered how the hell those things managed to stay alive for EIGHTEEN YEARS, and now I know.

    • tahrey says:

You couldn’t have been wondering that very long, given that the LJ4 range was launched in ’92 …

But still, I have also seen random ones of these in use in various places, ages reaching 12+ years, and marvelled at their sheer unbreakability. But that’s HP printers for you; if you can continue to find and pay for the cartridges / toner / etc, perform some very basic maintenance every other year, are willing to buy interface converters when whatever socket they use eventually goes out of fashion, and are happy with the just-about-passable print quality, you’ve got a friend for life. I also keep running across old Deskjet 500s and 300s (including one of my own which i dust off for old time’s sake now and then) and had an 870 that had to be scrapped when no-one made affordable compatible ink cartridges any more. They’re like the Epson LQs of the ink and laser world.

      • kosher ham says:

        Ummm…. ’92 WAS 18 years ago, dude…

        • Shelly says:

Umm dude, are you looking at the newest iPod and marvel at how it lasted 18 years? Didn’t think so. I agree with tahrey. I work with a lot of HP printers and that model lasts forever. They LJ5 models are the same way. They have horrible quality and very slow, but the only time I had to replace one was when they wanted a new one. Otherwise a simple maintenance kit every year along with toner, and It’s rock solid.

    • Murf says:

We still have one of those printers going strong.

  5. Schilcote says:

The question is, which one of your employees reprogrammed it to say that? He deserves a raise.

    • outworldcats says:

Yeah, I remember seeing a picture of one reprogrammed to say”Feed Me A Cat” instead of “PC Load Letter”. I always wanted to do that where I used to work, but it was a two-person office, so I knew it would result in my getting a Agent Gibbs-style head smack.

    • Shelly says:

If that was not photoshoped, I really want to know how they did that.

  6. Stripes says:

So this is why the one my parents had used to jam up so much… It was trying to feed off them. I knew something about it was evil.

  7. kosher ham says:

So that’s how you refill the toner…

  8. ITMonkey says:

LaserJet 4? You sure?… looks like a III to me. I just about fell out of my chair when I saw this and yes these things are indeed evil. I must agree that they are dern near indestructable… previous poster was right, as long as you keep buying maintenance kits an HP will last pretty much forever.

  9. Purdy Birdy says:

I will now be afraid to use the one we have at school…

    • BellatrixFan says:

The one at my school is evil in the sense that, no matter HOW carefully you put in the paper, it always jams.

      • You need a maintainance kit then, the pick up rollers are probably worn. Damn i loved these printers, I used to have one with a jet direct card. No worries about changing interfaces as it was right on the lan. Also had the extra paper pick up bin too. I only got rid of it becuase of the cost of the toners.

  10. Elena says:

ahhh… i have one fo these in my office… its slow as hell but so reliable! .. i want to make mine say things too..anyone know how to do this?

  11. Fantym420 says:

I have one of these in my office, and would have to say it’s more like a zombie than a vampire. When it’s good it goes forever, otherwise it eats your brains.
